About this journey

This tour from Ouarzazate to Erg Chegaga adds an extra stop at the Tinfou dunes — a small, striking set of orange dunes near Zagora — to the classic Draa Valley route toward Morocco’s largest dune field.

With an extra day built in, the pace is more relaxed than our 4-day version, with time to properly explore Tamegroute’s pottery cooperatives and library before the final push into Erg Chegaga for two nights of desert camping.

Day 1 :

Ouarzazate to Zagora

Ouarzazate to Agdz to Zagora

The road follows the Draa Valley south through Agdz, known for its kasbahs and palm groves, continuing to Zagora, once the starting point of trans-Saharan caravan routes.

Overnight in Zagora, with time to explore the town's souks and palm groves.

Day 2 :

Zagora to M'Hamid

Zagora to Tamegroute to Tinfou dunes to M'Hamid

A stop in Tamegroute reveals a centuries-old library and traditional green pottery workshops, followed by a visit to the Tinfou dunes, a small but striking set of orange dunes just outside Zagora.

The road continues to M'Hamid, the last town before the true Sahara, for an overnight stay.

Day 3 :

M'Hamid to Erg Chegaga

M'Hamid to Erg Chegaga by 4x4

A 4x4 track leads from M'Hamid into Erg Chegaga itself, where a camel ride among the dunes precedes a desert camp dinner and the first night camping under canvas or open sky.

Full day and second night at Erg Chegaga

A full day to explore Erg Chegaga — climbing dunes for panoramic views, sandboarding, and resting through the midday heat.

Day 5 :

Return to Ouarzazate

Erg Chegaga to M'Hamid to Zagora to Ouarzazate

After a final sunrise over the dunes, the private vehicle retraces the route north through M'Hamid and Zagora, arriving back in Ouarzazate by evening.
