About this journey

This is the shortest genuine desert trip in Morocco we offer from M’Hamid u2014 a 2-night, 3-day escape built for travellers with limited time who still want to reach Erg Chegaga, Morocco’s largest dune field, not just the smaller dunes near town.

Day one covers a camel ride out of M’Hamid; day two is a 4×4 transfer to Chegaga itself for sunset, dinner and a night camping among the dunes. It’s a compact, complete introduction to camp desert Mhamid life without the multi-day commitment of a full trek.

Day 1 :

Arrival in M'Hamid - First Steps by Camel

M'Hamid to nomad camp

Arrive in M'Hamid in the afternoon and meet your guide at the town centre before setting off by camel across the first stretches of sand. It's a short ride, just enough to leave the town behind and feel the desert take over.

At camp, you'll have time to explore the surrounding dunes and watch the sunset before a candlelit dinner and your first night in a traditional nomad tent.

Day 2 :

To Chegaga - Morocco's Largest Dunes

Nomad camp to M'Hamid to Chegaga by 4x4

After breakfast, return to M'Hamid on foot or by camel before continuing by 4x4 toward Chegaga — the largest dune field in Morocco, roughly 60 kilometres from M'Hamid. Lunch is taken en route in the shade of palm and tamarisk trees.

By late afternoon you'll reach the Chegaga bivouac in time for sunset over the dunes, followed by dinner and an evening under canvas or, weather permitting, directly beneath the stars.

Day 3 :

Sunrise and Return

Chegaga to M'Hamid by 4x4

Breakfast is served at camp before the 4x4 retraces the route back to M'Hamid, bringing this short but complete desert escape to a close.

Two nights is a small window, but enough to see the Sahara shift from small dunes near M'Hamid to the vast scale of Chegaga — and to understand why so many travellers come back for longer.
