About this journey

This Ouarzazate desert trip to the Erg Chegaga dunes is our longest and most complete version of the route — the Draa Valley, Zagora, Tamegroute, the Tinfou dunes, and three full nights of desert camping instead of two.

The extra time means a genuinely unhurried pace: a full rest day at Erg Chegaga on top of sunrise, sunset, sandboarding and a possible visit to a nomad well, before the return drive to Ouarzazate.

Day 1 :

Ouarzazate to Zagora

Ouarzazate to Agdz to Zagora

The road follows the Draa Valley south through Agdz, known for its kasbahs and palm groves, continuing to Zagora, once the starting point of trans-Saharan caravan routes to Timbuktu.

Overnight in Zagora, with time to explore the town's souks and palm groves.

Day 2 :

Zagora to M'Hamid

Zagora to Tamegroute to Tinfou dunes to M'Hamid

A stop in Tamegroute reveals a centuries-old library and traditional green pottery workshops, followed by a visit to the Tinfou dunes just outside Zagora.

The road continues to M'Hamid, the last town before the true Sahara, for an overnight stay.

Day 3 :

M'Hamid to Erg Chegaga

M'Hamid to Erg Chegaga by 4x4

A 4x4 track leads from M'Hamid into Erg Chegaga itself, where a camel ride among the dunes precedes a desert camp dinner and the first night camping under canvas or open sky.

Full Day at Erg Chegaga

Sandboarding and dune climbs

A full day to explore Erg Chegaga — climbing the highest dunes for sweeping views, sandboarding, and resting through the hottest hours.

A second night is spent camping among the dunes.

Day 5 :

Rest Day in the Dunes

Free day at Erg Chegaga, possible nomad well visit

A third and final day at Erg Chegaga, with time to properly rest, walk among the dunes, or visit a nomad well nearby where local herders water their camels.

Day 6 :

Return to Ouarzazate

Erg Chegaga to M'Hamid to Zagora to Ouarzazate

After a final sunrise over the dunes, the private vehicle retraces the route north through M'Hamid and Zagora, arriving back in Ouarzazate by evening.
